SUBJECTS OF THE MONTH

September 2026 – April 2027

• September: Reflections — Using mirrored surfaces—water, glass, metal, or mirrors—to create visual symmetry, distortion, or layered compositions.
• October: Night Photography — Captured in low-light or nighttime conditions, often emphasizing artificial light, long exposures, and contrast between light and dark.
• November:  Photo Journalism — Documenting real events or stories with authenticity and minimal manipulation, aiming to inform or convey truth.
• December: Alleys — Narrow passageways, typically urban, highlighting texture, depth, light, and the character or mood of overlooked spaces.
• January: Golden Hour — Taken shortly after sunrise or before sunset, characterized by warm, soft, directional light that enhances color and texture.
• February: Fire — Flames or heat are central elements, capturing motion, color, intensity, or symbolic meaning.
• March: Silhouette — Subject that appear as a dark shape against a brighter background, emphasizing outline, form, and contrast over detail.
• April: Glass — Incorporated as a subject or element—exploring transparency, reflections, refraction, distortion, or layering effects.

September 2027 – April 2028

• September: Weather — Storms, fog, mist, downpours, rainbows, lightning, tornadoes, blizzards, etc.
• October:  The Road Less Traveled — Create an image that captures the essence of taking the less traveled way (in the spirit of the Robert Frost poem).
• November:  Decay — Embodies the notion of decay, decomposition, or the possibility of future revitalization.  Objects such as rusty vehicles, aging animals, old buildings, or anything past its “expiration date” are possibilities.
• December:  Composites — Images comprised of two or more images or parts of images.
• January:  Things from the Ocean — Flotsam & jetsam, fish, seashells, turtles, driftwood, & extra points for mermaids/men; anything that has spent time in the ocean — not a lake, river or stream.
• February:  Textures — Lighting techniques that enhance highlights and shadows will be key to enhancing the texture of an object.  This is an opportunity to make a 2-dimensional image feel 3-D.
• March:  Music — Anything related to music, e.g. musicians, instruments, concerts, bands, media, reproduction equipment, etc.  Be creative and create images that sing.
• April:  Scenic Images from Spokane County (outside the city limits) — Make sure the image is beyond the city limits but still within Spokane County boundaries.  The scenic is up to you.
